extracts from an ongoing data sonification research project, these miniatures are based on tidal data (water height measured each minute for a week) from six locations on the west coast of France (Cherbourg, Saint-Quay-Portrieux, Brest, Lorient, Saint-Nazaire, Les Sables d’Olonne). Each miniature explores the sonification of this data in a slightly different way.
in the first, the data affects the grain length and density for a granular synth using six harmonics (one for each location) from a guitar tuned in just intonation, increasing activity as the water rises.
the second makes use of impulse responses to filter sea-side field recordings using the same six pitches as in the first miniature. The higher the water, the more wet (pitched) the signal is, the lower the level the more dry (with more of the field recording sounds) it is.
the third uses sustractive synthesis, bringing out the same six frequencies as before from pink noise. The higher the water level in one location, the more prominent the corresponding pitch will be in the mix.
