Work experience
Freelance audiovisual composer
2017 -
Working on audiovisual, but also acoustic, acousmatic, live-electronic, and installation pieces. Worked with the Ligeti quartet, the Riot ensemble, Distractfold, Rosie Middleton, Cecilia Bignall, etc. in venues like the Southbank centre, St. John’s church in Waterloo, the Phipps hall in Huddersfield (as part of hcmf//), etc. My music has also been recorded by the BBC for broadcast on Radio 3. I currently focus on data-driven pieces that map processing data from certain artificial neural networks onto sound, using aesthetic codes from glitch and instrumental drone traditions to create timbrally-intricate representations of algorithmic structures and processes.
Sound and video technician
Royal Northern College of Music
2022 –
Working on a variety of internal and external events (from acoustic chamber ensembles to large ensembles with full amplification). Dealing with recording and live sound. Answering requests from students and academic staff and providing training on audio software & hardware.
Freelance live/recording engineer
2021 –
Recording chamber workshops and performances, rehearsals, and installations in various venues (the RNCM, Depot Mayfield, the Bridgewater Hall, the Anthony Burgess foundation, Manchester Museum, Hallé St Peter’s, etc.), from solo to orchestral performances, for a variety of instrumentations (winds, brass, strings, percussion, automated installations, live electronics, fixed media, etc.). And doing live sound for similarly diverse range of performances.
Developer
Puce Muse
2022 (4 months)
Developing a vocal physical modelling synthesis app in Max/MSP, part of a series of audio and visual generation and processing programs, and mapping parameters to physical controllers.
Developer
PRiSM (centre for Practice and Research in Science and Music)
2021 – 2023 (2 years)
Working on the development and testing of the training code of a recursive neural network (RNN) built for audio analysis and generation, used in various internal and external composition projects. Focusing on the implementation of mixed precision in the training script, and working with researchers on bridging the gap between creative-driven projects and the centre’s technical expertise and resources. Working in python with TensorFlow, Keras and Docker.
Education
University of Manchester
2023 –
PhD in composition, fully funded by the AHRC’s NWCDTOP, looking at the sonification and visualisation of processing data from artificial neural networks (GANs, CNNs, MLPs, VAEs, etc.), to create audiovisual works providing some insights into how these black-box algorithms operate.
Royal Northern College of Music
2021 – 2023
Master’s degree (MMus) in composition & PRiSM with a merit scholarship. Distinction (83).
Laureate of the RNCM Gold medal in 2023.
Leeds Conservatoire
2017 – 2021
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Music (Classical) – Composition. First Class Honours (85).
Laureate of the Joseph Stones Prize in 2019 and 2021.
